About Hashimoto’s Disease

Hashimoto’s disease is the most common type of hypothyroidism in the United States. It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. This inhibits the thyroid’s ability to produce enough of the hormone which regulates metabolism.

Hashimoto’s is more common in women and usually appears between ages 30 and 50. The condition is hereditary and more common in those who have other autoimmune diseases including lupus, Addison’s disease, type 1 diabetes, or B12 deficiency.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism symptoms may vary for each patient. Some common symptoms include:

  • Weight gain
  • Reduced energy
  • Memory problems, depression, or other cognitive issues
  • Menstrual irregularity
  • Constipation, heartburn, or other digestive issues
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Feeling col
  • Joint stiffness
  • Muscle pain
  • Puffy eyes and/or face
  • Thinning hair
  • Slow heartbeat

In some cases, patients with Hashimoto’s disease may develop a goiter. This is a visibly enlarged or swollen thyroid, which causes the neck to look full or swollen. Goiters are typically painless but may cause a sensation of fullness in the throat.

Natural Thyroid Treatment

Natural thyroid treatments, also known as desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) or natural desiccated thyroid extract (NDT) are supplements made from the dried thyroid glands of animals, typically pigs. In taking this supplement, patients with Hashimoto’s disease or other types of hypothyroidism can alleviate their symptoms. Natural thyroid treatments help to replace the hormones that are typically produced by the thyroid gland, which restores balanced hormone levels and reduces symptoms. Hashimoto’s disease patients who take natural thyroid supplements often report weight loss, increased focus and energy, and improved mood and sleep quality.

While natural hormone treatments are effective for many patients, animals have different natural hormone levels than humans, so it is important for patients to maintain regular testing and supervision from a medical professional throughout their treatment. This will ensure that their hormones are properly regulated as they undergo natural thyroid treatments.
